The Michigan Spine Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MSSIC) seeks to measure and improve the care and outcomes of patients who undergo spine surgery. It is supported by the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan as part of the BCBSM “Value Partnerships” program.
MSSIC focuses indications for surgery such as stenosis, disk herniation, and degenerative diseases for which pain relief and restoration of function are primary treatment goals. Surgeries for tumors, trauma, severe scoliosis or spinal cord injury are not within the scope of this initiative.
MSSIC has focused its activities on a limited set of quality domains and is gradually expanding its focus. The initial areas of focus have been prevention of surgical complications, implementing an “Enhanced Recovery After Surgery” (ERAS) program at participating hospitals, and controlling use of opioids for post-surgical pain relief. The project uses a patient registry to maintain and analyze data on patient characteristics, treatment processes and outcomes of care. The MSSIC coordinating center is housed at Henry Ford Health, based in Detroit.
We prioritize the needs and well-being of our patients, treating each one with compassion and empathy.
We are constantly seeking new and innovative ways to improve the quality and outcomes of spine surgery care.
We believe that collaboration and teamwork are essential for achieving our goals and improving spine surgery care in Michigan.
We are committed to providing safe and trustworthy care, and we work tirelessly to earn and maintain the trust of our patients and partners.
